A Home of the Dead occurs as novel published in 1862 by Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky.

1927-1928 Leos Janacek made an operatic version of this loosely knit novel (being like an enumeration of on the face of it unrelated information & cases attached to life within the Siberian prison, organised by "theme" like than as a continuous story), sustaining a title From the House of the Dead. One of these days it would exist as his previous opera.

Dostoevsky himself spent quaternion years withwithin exile in the Siberian prison camp as punishment his conviction for involvement in the Petrashevsky circle. This personal experience allows him to describe by owning awesome legitimacy a conditions of life & characters of the convicts.

the novel portrays a life of convicts inside a Siberian prison camp. A teller, Aleksandr Petrovich Goryanchikov, has been sentenced to deportation & decade season's firm labour for the slaying of his married woman. Life inside prison is particularly stiff for Aleksandr Petrovich, since he occurs as lord & suffers a malice of the more captive, 100% of whom belong to the peasantry. Gradually Goryanchikov overcomes his horror at his situation & his fellow convicts, undergoing the spiritual re-awakening that culminates with his release from either a camp.
